About Teeth Whitening

Over the years, food and drinks leave stains on the dental enamel that make the smile appear dull and yellow. Yancho Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Traverse City, MI offers patients options for professional teeth whitening. To help his patients get their brightest smile, board-certified dentist Dr. Phillip Yancho offers 2 primary options with Kör® products for professional teeth whitening:

  • In-Office Whitening: This process allows the use of the highest concentration of peroxide gel that can only be done at the dental office. In-office whitening is best for significant color change in a short period of time, and can be tailored for people with sensitive teeth.
  • Take Home Whitening Kits: This whitener consists of a lower concentration of peroxide gel so the treatment can safely be left on longer. Dr. Yancho also provides a custom tray to hold the gel on the teeth, sometimes overnight. The patient has the greatest control over bleaching with this method. How white the teeth get, their sensitivity to the bleach, and how often they bleach are parameters all controlled by the patient.

What to Expect

Before starting any teeth whitening treatment, a thorough examination is conducted by the dentist to assess the patient’s mouth, including the condition of the enamel. Based on the exam, the appropriate method is discussed with the patient and chosen. It’s important for patients to understand that if enamel is in overall poor condition, the teeth will be too sensitive for teeth whitening to work. The dentist may recommend porcelain veneers, which achieves teeth whitening by bonding a custom-made veneer over the natural tooth. For patients whose mouths are in good condition, there are several teeth whitening options available.

Treatment Aftercare

While no teeth whitening option is permanent, results can last several years. The results of laser treatments last the longest at 3 – 4 years. In some cases, results can last more than 5 years. With in-home treatments, patients can expect results to last a couple of years. Whitening is extended through proper care, such as regular brushing with recommended toothpastes, flossing, and appropriate mouthwashes. Regular check-ups should be part of this routine, since regular professional cleanings can remove plaque and tartar. In addition, patients should limit foods and drinks like berries, tea, coffee, and soda that stain teeth.
